J. Nichole Noël was born in Trinidad. Her parents and four sisters migrated to Canada in April 1970. She started writing poetry at the age of 16. In 2002, she decided to take her poetry to another level of recitals and started to perform her works theatrically. J. Nichole is a multi-talented artiste who has recorded one CD, written eight poetry books and two children’s books. Sheila Walsh CHFI Radio 98.1 FM has described J. Nichole as being, “very reminiscent of Maya Angelou”. She has also been described as, “the female Barry White of poetry”, and “a modern day Millie Jackson”. She is driven, and understands there is nothing that she cannot accomplish. She says “I strive not to be the best, rather, unique in what I do best.”
Her first CD “Verse … The Power of the Spoken Words in Music” was released in November 2004 at The Hummingbird Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto. The successful album encompasses the theatrical art of performance poetry with a smooth blend of Jazz, Blues, African Drumming, Spirituals, R&B and Reggae, which accompanies her riveting, soft, distinct voice.
Three years after the release of her CD, J. Nichole’s book gained the attention of Canada Extra book critic Stephanie Smith. In the December 2007 issue, Stephanie writes, “As always J. Nichole Noël delivers. The series is profound and insightful. Painting pictures with words, she offers sage-like wisdom that forces the reader to think. Overall Verse ... is a stellar literary body of work. A must-have for any poetry collection!”
Her innovative style carries the art of performance poetry and song to a high level of entertainment. Her diversity has allowed her to break down many cultural barriers, gracing multi- genre stages. This has garnered her much attention, leading to several awards and recognition. She is a finalist in the 2007 Mississauga Arts Council Emerging Literary Award category. In 2006 J. Nichole won the Women’s Worth Award. She also won the Dub Poetry category of the 2005 Toronto International Reggae Music Award.
J. Nichole has shared the stage with the legendary Drifters, Jerry Butler, Rhonda Franklin and Grammy Award Winner Regina Belle. She has performed with many popular Canadian based artistes such as Leroy Brown, Kay Morris, Marvia Providence, Eddie Bullen and Liberty Silver. She has collaborated with dance hall D.J. Shadrock, Juno Nominee Lorraine Reid and accomplished pianist, singer songwriter Don Quarles. These experiences have earned her the respect of being one of Toronto’s most versatile performance artistes.
Ms. Noël has also appeared on Rogers Daytime Television, Planet Africa Television, and Rogers Cable Television’s award winning Christmas Special video. Performed on the Newmarket Children’s Festival, The International Dub Poetry Festival, Carafest, Carabram, Carassauga, Irie Music Festival, toured New York in August 2004 and has hosted the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Peel Annual Women’s Brunch 2005.
